What Exactly is a Bernedoodle?

A Bernedoodle is an intentional cross between a Bernese Mountain Dog and a Poodle, and this cross produces a puppy who is downright adorable.

This breed is happy, goofy, smart, and cuddly. Bernedoodles are playful and affectionate; they do well with children and love to spend time with their families.

Unlike a purebred Bernese Mountain Dog, this cross will not cover your furniture and floors with fur! This combination pulls out the best qualities from their two parent breeds.

The Standard Poodle has a well-deserved reputation as a highly intelligent dog with a loving personality and non-shedding coat. The Bernese Mountain Dog has a teddy bear personality, gorgeous coat and markings but does shed heavily.

Bernedoodle Characteristics

When the two are bred together, their diverse genetic background produces a hybrid puppy that is healthier than either breed. A Bernedoodle has a much longer life expectancy than the Bernese Mountain Dog, a low shedding coat, and a highly trainable intelligence. This is one amazing dog!

When purchasing a Standard Bernedoodle puppy, it is essential to be aware of all characteristics of both breeds in this cross. Looking for a puppy to bring into your family is an exciting process, but having the knowledge of what to expect with any dog is the key to successful integration into your family. A puppy is a huge commitment, so being knowledgeable about how to train and care for your Standard Bernedoodle puppy is very important.

Temperament

The Standard Bernedoodle combines two well-mannered and loving breeds. The Bernese Mountain side of this cross will lend a playful and friendly disposition. From an intelligence standpoint, the Poodle is known for its high trainability, making it a great pet in general. This breed should also do well with other pets as long as it is socialized early.

Activity level

The Standard Bernedoodle should have a moderate activity level. Daily walks should be enough to satisfy the exercise requirements of a Bernedoodle.

Size

Standard Bernedoodles will usually weigh 60 - 100 pounds, and will stand 23 plus inches in most cases. Crossing a Bernese Mountain Dog with a Miniature or Moyen Poodle will create smaller dogs.

Color

Finding a poodle with the genetics to produce the popular bi and tri color puppies that have become so popular can be tricky. Using genetic testing to determine which genes the Poodle can pass on can help select a Poodle to pair with the Bernese Mountain Dog to produce the desired colors and markings.

Coat

Most Bernedoodles have long, wavy coats that shed minimally. Curly coats are very common and these shed very little as well, like the Poodle's coat. Because of the minimal shedding, this dog is a great choice for many allergy sufferers.

Puppies

Bernedoodle puppies look like little bundles of curly fur, and they are just full of love and affection. Because these dogs are intelligent, it is important to start training puppies from a young age.
